Wood, Wire & Sound
Exhibition highlights locally crafted musical instruments,
June 1–September 27
Wood, Wire & Sound celebrates the creativity, craftsmanship, and artistry of handmade musical instruments in an exhibition featuring custom-built ukuleles, guitars, Lowebows, cigar box instruments, and experimental stringed creations by mostly local artists and musicians. The exhibition explores the intersection of form and function, where woodworking, sculpture, sound, and personal expression come together. The exhibition highlights instruments created not only to be viewed as works of art, but also to be played, heard, and experienced. From finely crafted traditional builds to inventive one-of-a-kind creations made from reclaimed and unexpected materials, each instrument reflects the vision, skill, and musical identity of its maker. The show includes contributing artists and musicians connected to The Folk Alliance of Door County and the Ukulele Society of Door County, underscoring the strength of the region’s maker and performer community. Contributing Artists include: Jerry Lecy: Handmade ukuleles for the exhibition. John Lowe ('Johnny Lobo'): Handmade instruments: Lowebow, cigar box guitar, stick guitar. Karen Reifsnyde: Two current handmade custom ukuleles featuring distinctive and unconventional sound hole placement. Mark Hunt: Custom electric guitar built from leftover stair treads used during the construction of a log cabin in 2005. Patricia Webster: Collection of handmade stringed instruments including a walnut concert ukulele, birdseye maple electric ukulele, teak bass ukulele, and an 8-string bouzouki. Roy Ames: Included are a finished concert ukulele and tenor ukulele.
