Pollination

Artist Statement:
My design features a variety of pollinators and the plants that thrive from their work. The
birds, bees, butterflies and flowers create a symphony of color with lots of busy, buzzing
excitement! Bright colors bring life, movement and visual interest to the egg. The creation
process included careful measuring to achieve the horizontal bands, which was challenging, but
very satisfying to complete. After sketching the major elements, the egg was painted with an
outdoor oil-based paint and then protected with a clear varnish. I thoroughly enjoyed paying
tribute to the hard- working pollinators and the beauty they help create.

About the Artist
Crystal Potho
Crystal "Cris" Pothoff is an artist and educator specializing in the intricate art of pysanky, a wax-resist batik technique on eggshells. Introduced to the craft in 2005 by Shelly Janikowski, Cris honed her skills under the guidance of esteemed instructors, including Luba Perchyshyn, founder of the Ukrainian Gift Shop. Since 2008, she has been sharing her passion for pysanky by teaching workshops in central Illinois, inspiring others to explore this timeless tradition. In 2016, Cris expanded her artistic repertoire by studying acrylic painting and drawing at Illinois Central College and joining the Illinois Art League. These experiences introduced her to new techniques and media, allowing her to incorporate diverse styles into her work. Her art, deeply inspired by landscapes and nature, reflects her belief that creativity is a spiritual process, breathing life and beauty into every piece she creates. Cris draws inspiration from St. Basil the Great, whose words resonate with her mission as an artist: “The world is a work of art displayed for the beholding of all people; to make them known Him who created it.” Through her art, Cris invites others to see and appreciate the beauty in the world around them.
