Lake Michigan Zen

Artist Statement:
Lake Michigan Zen captures the tranquility of our great lake through layers of acrylic paint and enamel. The fish found within are individual interpretations carved out of clay and then raku fired. The entire ritual of creating this work helped to calm and center myself and will hopefully bring peace to all who gaze upon it.

About the Artist
Annie Larsen
As both a teacher and a creator, I am deeply committed to the process of artistic discovery and expression. For the past twenty five years as an art educator in Green Bay public schools, I strive to instill in my students the importance of process as much as product- emphasizing creativity, exploration, and the joy that comes from working with one's hands. My own work, both in the classroom and studio, reflects a lifelong pursuit of balance; between the order of technique and freedom of artistic intuition. My piece for the 2025 Eggstravaganza is a reflection of the tension between structure and freedom, capturing the interplay between controlled techniques and the spontaneous beauty that emerges from fire and light. Raku, with its unpredictable nature, allows me to explore the raw forces of transformation, where each piece is uniquely shaped by the fire's touch. The cracks and textures that appear during the firing process are not mistakes, but essential marks of the piece's journey, embodying the tension between fragility and resistance. This work of art speaks to my fascination with light and color. My intentions are to demonstrate the dynamic, ever-changing composition of Lake Michigan with the order and organization of stained glass work. Ultimately I invite the viewers to see the Great Lakes shoreline in new ways.
